Which foreign language should I learn in India? Part 2

In continuation with our blog from September 2020, this month we will cover a fewmore languages that can be learnt in India.


Chinese/Mandarin: can be learnt in some colleges, many major universities at various levels up to graduation and post-graduation levels in Mumbai, Delhi, UP, Chennai, etc. and in private institutes all over India. HSK Chinese proficiency test is an international online test available at 6 levels (1-2 for basic, 3-4 for intermediate, 5-6 for advance level) for which students can apply from centers in India. Other tests like Youth Chinese tests (1-4), business Chinese test (1-3) and Spoken Chinese tests (1-3) are also available. Completing the first four levels can take upto 2 years.

Countries where Chinese language is used: China, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Tibet.

Script: Chinese script does not have alphabets but characters and each one represents a word. Learning it till the intermediate level can take up to 2 years and a lot of practice and time is required to remember them thoroughly.

Employment opportunities in various industries: along with numerous jobs in translation, interpretation and training, many posts are also available in multinational companies and knowledge of Chinese will also be useful in industries like electronics, telecommunications, automobile, IT, think tanks, surveys, government and engineering

Portuguese: can be learnt in India in many colleges and universities through part time courses or also at graduation and post-graduation levels in universities like University of Goa. EPE- Portuguese language proficiency test is an international online test available at 6 levels for which students can apply from centers in India.

Countries where Portuguese is spoken: Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Macau, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Script: Portuguese uses the Roman script and some accents and is therefore easy to learn for those who know English

Employment opportunities in various industries: along with numerous jobs in translation, interpretation and training, many posts are also available in multinational companies andknowledge of Portuguese will also be useful in industries like pharmaceutical, automobile, IT and engineering.

Italian: can be learnt in some private institutes and some colleges/universities in India at basic and intermediate levels. Italian language proficiency test is an international online test available in 6 levels for which students can apply from centers in India.

Countries where Italian language is used: Italy and Switzerland

Script: Italian uses the Roman script and some accents and is therefore easy to learn for those who know English.

Employment opportunities in various industries: along with numerous jobs in translation, interpretation and training, many posts are also available in multinational companies and knowledge of Italian will also be useful in industries like food and beverages, auto mobile, fashion, IT and engineering.

Korean: can be learnt in some colleges and many universities (like JNU) upto graduation and post-graduation levelsand private institutes in India at basic and intermediate levels.

Countries where Korean language is used: North and South Korea.

Script: Korean script (Hangul) consists of 24 letters and it is relatively easy to learn as compared to other Asian languages like Japanese or Chinese.

Employment opportunities in various industries: along with numerous jobs in translation, interpretation and training, many posts are also available in multinational companies and knowledge of Korean will also be useful in industries like Electrical equipment and telecommunications, auto mobile, IT, and engineering.

Arabic: can be learnt at many major colleges and universities in India up to MA, MPhil and PhD level. ALPT (Arabic Language Proficiency Test) is an international online test available with three evaluation levels, for which students can apply from India.

Countries where Arabic language is used: Algeria, Bahrain, Chad, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen

Script: Arabic script has 28 letters and the Arabic alphabet is known as abjad. It is not very difficult nor time-consuming to learn it.

Employment opportunities in various industries: along with numerous jobs in translation, interpretation and training, many posts are also available for Arabic language experts in multinational companies and in industries like oil and gas/ petrochemical and chemical industries, agriculture and tourism.

Turkish: can be learnt at major colleges and universities in India –at certificate, diploma and advanced diploma level and a full-time graduation course is also available.

Countries where Turkish language is used: Turkey, Azerbaijan and Cyprus

Script: Turkish is written in Latin script and it has 29 letters therefore it is not very difficult to learn it for those who know English.

Employment opportunities in various industries: along with numerous jobs in translation, interpretation and training, many posts are also available for Turkish language experts in multinational companies and in industries like oil and gas/ petrochemical and chemical industries, agriculture and tourism.

Basic language training can be covered in a couple of months depending on the language and its script. However, a commitment of at least 1-2 years is required to learn a language thoroughly so as to be able to use it professionally.
